Apprentice Impressing From the Start
Lucy Dean left Tollbar Academy, in Grimsby, with 13 A*-C GCSE’s and went onto study the International Baccalaureate, the equivalent of 4 A-Levels, which involved her studying 6 areas (English, Business and Management, Biology, Visual Arts, Spanish and Maths). With such fantastic achievements it is no surprise that she successfully secured all offers from various Universities. However, when the time came to choose which University place she wanted to accept, Lucy turned them all down in favour of an Apprenticeship.

Nicola Burton and Caroline Landau from Francis Askew Primary School have recently achieved their Intermediate Level Apprenticeships, Nicola in Business and Administration and Caroline in IT Users. Nicola is the Administration and Organisational Assistant, working on the reception at the school, whilst Caroline is a Nursery Nurse working with 3-5 year olds in the Foundation Unit. Both Nicola and Caroline have been extremely committed, being the first to arrive and last to leave workshops and spending their own time doing extra work towards the NVQ. This commitment means that both have completed their Apprenticeships ahead of schedule and are now progressing onto their Advanced Level Apprenticeships.

MP Andrew Percy met with staff from Goole High School on Monday to mark the start of National Apprenticeship Week. Ms Joanna Henderson from the National Apprenticeship Service and Mr Martin Knight and Mrs Amy O'Sullivan from Hull Business Training Centre joined the group to talk about Apprenticeships; who is eligible, how it is funded and the very practical nature of the taught framework.

Hull Business Training Centre had already been involved at Tweendykes School with regards to qualifications for the Teaching Assistants when they approached me about the Apprentice Scheme. We were provided with a number of CVs from the Apprentices who were interested in working in a school environment. The information provided from the Apprentices was of excellent quality and we were not pressurised from the Training Centre, we were given time to consider whether this was the right route for us.

Jade Woodfield gained a place at Strawberry Design whilst completing her IT Users Apprenticeship. Jade did so well that she completed her Apprenticeship 2 months early, gained a seat on the Humber Apprentice Panel and was nominated for an award at the Mail's Business awards. Jade won the award for Outstanding Young Achiever in Education and Business beating two other finalists both who had set up their own businesses.

Angela King works for the City Health Care Partnership (CHCP) within the Health Promotion Team at Conifer House. She decided to do an Adult Apprenticeship in order to gain the necessary qualifications to progress her career at the CHCP. The clear understanding and professional support given to Angela by her assessor, Emma Santos, also helped Angela to decide that an Apprenticeship was right for her.

From the 27th September to the 1st October, Hull Business Training Centre held it's charity week. We raised money in support of Mencap by holding "dress down days", a tuck shop and a general knowladge quiz. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who contributed their hard earned money to this great cause and helped us raise a grand total of £85.05!

Charlotte Smith started her Apprenticeship at the end of October 2009. She secured a placement with South Pacific Agencies Ltd as an Administration Assistant. Her job involves her giving quotes and making booking for the company as well as general administration jobs. Charlotte enjoys her job as she is always learning new things and every day is different. She feels that her assessor, Janice, has been a great help and she is incredibly proud of passing her Level 2 and starting her Advanced Apprenticeship.

Aged 18, Jodie started her Apprenticeship in May and attained an administrative role with Ryan Electrical Services in Hessle. Jodie had a positive and willing attitude to learning new things which has helped her excel in her job role. Although she is a lot younger than the other team members she has shown great organisational and communication skill. She has an eager and decisive attitude which leads her to attack each new challenge with determination, never afraid to attempt any given task.

The Sangwin Group was established in 1922 and it’s companies operate within the Construction Industry. Hull Business Training Centre have developed a very successful working relationship with the group over the past several years. The group have embraced the Apprenticeship programme and as a sign of their commitment to developing young people, they have just taken on five new Apprentices in various Administrative roles. Four of these positions were created thanks to some help in the form of grants worth £2,500 each that the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) recently offered Employers as an incentive to create Apprenticeship Vacancies.

On Tuesday 2nd June, 4 staff members participated in a citywide relay run to mark the launch of NHS Hull's Altogether Healthier e-learning programme. An 'Olympic-style Baton' was brought in by train from London, where it was then taken to a series of handover points throughout Hull and finally over a finishing line beside NHS Hull's Health Central at St Stephens Shopping Centre. Martin, Abbie, Rob and Rebecca carried the baton 1 mile from the Training Centre to their handover point at KCFM. The main aim of the event was to raise awareness of the free online learning service provided by NHS Hull to help local people gain a greater understanding about how to live a healthy lifestyle and health services available.
